Best Home Fire Extinguishers 2020

Safety and helping people has always been my top priority and that’s why I want to discuss the best home fire extinguishers 2020.

I have assisted in many fire investigations during my career as a Police Detective and Medical Examiner Forensic Science Investigator. These fires destroyed property, lives, and leave a devastating blow to families and communities.

As a Medical Examiner Investigator, I have removed charred bodies from homes and cars after the fire was extinguished by the Fire Department. And in a lot of those cases, after the initial start of the fire, a fire extinguisher possibly could have prevented a larger fire.

But you like many other homeowners may think there’s no need to purchase a fire extinguisher. However, a fire extinguisher is just like insurance. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and don’t have it. Therefore, I will be introducing you to the best type of Fire Extinguishers of 2020.

The first type of fire extinguisher is the “Smart Fire Extinguisher” that is connected to a building or home alarm monitoring systems. This means that moment someone removes the fire extinguisher from the wall a circuit is tripped and triggers the building alarm. This very useful, if someone is blind, handicap, or elderly who lives alone because it can automatically notify the fire department and occupants of the structure.

Smarter Fire Extinguishers

A type of smart extinguisher developed by En-Gage Inc. is hardwired into the building’s infrastructure and the moment the fire extinguisher is removed from the wall it will trigger the building’s fire security control panel alarm or the home fire monitoring system. It will also notify you when the pressure falls below safe operating levels.

This is huge because sometimes the person using the fire extinguisher is so busy trying to put the fire and then forget to immediately notify other people to exit the building or home.

And depending on where your smoke alarms are position in the structure it may not detect the smoke at the initial start of a fire. Therefore, having this added protection of automatically triggering a smoke alarm the moment a fire extinguisher is removed from the wall is smart technology.

But if you have the standard model fire extinguisher it’s a good idea to have more than just one smoke alarm in your home. Why? Because most smoke alarms are battery operated and a dead battery will not detect smoke. Therefore you need a backup, so buy a second smoke alarm today to safeguard your life and your family.

After purchasing the smoke alarms place them in or near the kitchen, and in the downstairs or upstairs hallways, depending on the style of your home.

And it’s also a good idea to have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in your building or home as well. So don’t delay buying these inexpensive items to save lives.

Standard Fire Extinguishers

The older and reliable fire extinguisher is still used mostly by homeowners, but things are starting to change since people became aware of the smart fire extinguisher technology that can be integrated with Amazon Alexa.

Amazon Alexa

Alexa can help you guard your home. You start by setting up the Guard in the Alexa app. After you tell Alexa, I’m leaving” it will set the Guard away mode. Alexa can even send you smart alerts via mobile if your Echo device detects glass breaking, smoke alarms, burglary alarms, and carbon monoxide alarms.

In addition, Alexa can be integrated with your Amazon Ring video doorbell system.

Types Of Fires

There are basically four classes of fires:

  • Class A: Fires such as wood, paper, cloths, and plastics.
  • Class B: Fires such as flammable liquids such as oil, gasoline, grease, and alcohol.
  • Class C: Fires such as electrical equipment and appliances.
  • Class D: Flammable substances such as potassium and sodium

Every fire is extremely dangerous and it’s very important to know what type of fire extinguisher should be used on the different type of fires.

Types of Fire Extiguishers

These basic types of portable fire extinguishers are used in homes and businesses. They can be purchased online at Amazon, Walmart, Target, or your local hardware store and in conjunction with your Medical Alert Systems.

How Much Is A Fire Extinguisher

Fire extinguishers are price reasonable can range anywhere from $40 dollars to several hundred dollars depending on the size that you need. If you buying one for your home then the price will be at the low range but if you buying one for a large building, it’s a good idea to buy several large fire extinguishers. Businesses such as a car garage or a company that uses flammable liquids then the price will be in the higher range.

Smoke Alarms

What good is to buy a fire extinguisher and you haven’t purchased a smoke alarm? A smoke alarm is more important than fire extinguishers. Why?

Because the smoke alarm will actually alert you and your family that your house or structure is on fire and you need to act by using a fire extinguisher or get out of the building and call the fire department.

The smoke alarm will detect the smoke first before the fire reaches your location in the house, provided you have good batteries inside the smoke alarm. Most alarms are battery operated but can also be hardwired inside a home.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration smoke alarms/detectors should be tested at least once a month and the batteries replaced once or twice a year. You test these smoke alarms by pushing the center button and you should hear a series of beeps. This tells you that the alarm is working properly.

However, if you don’t hear anything or you see an amber light then immediately change the battery. Also if your smoke alarm suddenly starts to make short constant beeps then the battery needs to be changed immediately or as soon as possible.

A smoke alarm usually has a lifespan of 8-10 years. A carbon monoxide detector usually lasts about 5-7 years. A smoke alarm is essential for your home and most insurance companies will require that you have it installed in your home.

So don’t say you have a smoke alarm and then forget to buy one. This could cause issues with your insurance payoff if you have a fire and had no smoke alarm.

Smoke alarms are relatively cheap and inexpensive. They can be purchased at Amazon and at your local hardware stores.
